“in omri nitzan concept, the entire untenable plot is the dream of an Italian man disappointed in marriage. It explains a lot and the same time its master of stroke “ haaretz 16.5.2000 “a bombshell was dropped at the new Israeli opera last night. It has been a long time since last heard or saw such a brilliant performance of Rossini. Let us begin right at the end: we have not such a combination of wonderful music brilliant singing brilliant direction, breathtaking sets and stylish conducting in Israel for a long time. A brilliant crazy bombshell. this bombshell was dropped by omri nitzan with his direction that is filled with imagination. Through Rossini he provides all our ridiculous human frailties. Nitzan neither falls into the trap ol kitsch nor steps on the landmine of vulgarity. Everything with him is brilliant. But very human. Truly amazing. Ruth dar’s sets and costumes are stunning. Everything is done with a smile and a wink. I have never seen such a beautiful stage that serves the music so well – not even in greatest opera houses in the world. And thers a surprise: conductor jonatan webb gives us wonderfully warm flowing and stylish music. last night the new Israeli opera went up a class. There are suddenely superb voices. From the lips of bass simon amo (Mustafa) an impish Rossini flows. Carmen oferschino (issabella) is one of the voices who is born for Rossini. A voice with wonderful color together with a wonderful style that touches lighting. constraints of space force me not to mention all the other superb singres. But this performance was a festival of genuine Rossini. thgis direction and these sets can be presented with pride at any of the famous opera houses – in new york, Vienna or London. The new isreali opera can be justly proud. Should you go see it ? not a bit of it. Run – and fast. yedioth ahcronot 16/5/00 “drunk with colors” ‘those used to seen litaliana in algeri as an ethnic worok on an oriental place are recommended to see the brilliant and imagenative fantasy created by two of our best artists: director omri nitzan and set costume designer ruth dar. It is somewhere between fellini and Rossini. Captivating.| maarive 16.5.00 “an opera that is pleasureable to the eye and filled with humor” ha’ir 26/5/00 “was shown not only in tel aviv but via satellite on free big screen relays in remoe places. People there heard not only a first class Rossini an cast headed by bruce ford, but saw omri nitzans snappy staging. at the finale performance the linodro was the soft grained but agile Jeffrey Francis with her juicy mezzo and impeccable coloratura, Carmen oprisanus Isabella stole the show in spite of strong cometiton from the dark toned Mustafa of simone alaimo the musical taddeo of jose pardilha the bright Elvira of Sharon rostrof zamir and the focused zulma of amalia ishak. Dan ettingers conducting ha authority and spring. Staged as the dream of a modern utaluian man whgo turned out to be Mustafa the production was as broad as the bellies of the all pink chorus of enunchs yet the comedy never upstaged the music. Sometimes the opera can seem to be about nothing very much at all but there the sheikhs and their petrol drums give this meeting of cultures a nothing very mucxh at all but here the shieksh and their petrol drums give this meeting of cultures a real immediacy Opeura (uk) august 2000
